The United States government shuts down

The first government shutdown since 2013 was declared at midnight, Saturday Jan. 20 after senators were unable to reach a deal to fund the government. Donald Trump tweeted, “Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border. They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. #WeNeedMoreRepublicansIn18 in order to power through mess!” Trump rejected the Democrats’ request for a commitment to an immigration deal which would protect undocumented immigrants. According to NPR, this is the first time a shutdown has ever occurred with both houses of Congress and the White House controlled by the same party.
