H&M releases questionable ad

International retail giant H&M faced major backlash after releasing an advertisement featuring a young African-American model wearing a hoodie with the phrase “coolest monkey in the jungle.” The photo went viral on social media platforms, as did outrage over what was believed to be blatant racism. After removing the item and its image from its website, H&M quickly issued an apologetic statement, saying, “We sincerely apologize for offending people with this image of a printed hooded top. … We believe in diversity and inclusion in all that we do and will be reviewing all our internal policies accordingly to avoid any future issues.” In protest, multiple artists drew the photo, changing the phrase to say things like, “strongest king in the world” and “coolest king in the world.”
