Tennis closes out Fall with third place finish

In Hammond, the University of New Orleans ended its fall on a high note, taking three singles flights to defeat host and Southland Conference rival Southeastern Louisiana University 3-2 Sunday on the Southeastern Tennis Courts. The win improved the Privateers’ record to 3-1 in the George E. Fourmaux Fed Cup Invitational, good for a third-place finish.

   Claudette Gilhespie made quick work in her flight, defeating Fleur Holtkamp 6-2, 6-0. Brittany Johnson followed with a close victory 7-6, 7-5 and Yurina Asai edged out Ceci Mercier in a marathon match 6-3, 7-6 (13-11).

   The win closes the book in the fall for women’s tennis. Below are the full results and standings of the three-day tournament.

New Orleans 3, Southeastern Louisiana 2 (3rd Place Match)

Singles:

Claudette Gilhespie (UNO) def. Fleur Holtkamp (SLU) 6-2, 6-0

Brittany Johnson (UNO) def. Katya Cornejo (SLU) 7-6, 7-5

Yurina Asai (UNO) def. Ceci Mercier (SLU) 6-3, 7-6 (13-11)

Jiva de Veer (SLU) def. Lea Aguacil (UNO) 6-0, 6-1

Doubles:

Dalina Dahlmans/Ximena Yanez (SLU) def. Anja Luethi/Trang Dao (UNO) 6-3, 6-3

2nd Place – Lamar (3-1)
